Somewhat yes, but technically no. A Sprite is also classified as an Animated GIF. I'm sure you have noticed, but there are quite a few Sprites I have put on this fourm. Some are animated such as the bottom ones that move, but some don't move.
There's a wide variety of Sprite (Animated GIFS).
